VDA: New registrations of commercial vehicles back on growth course in 2023 - Registrations of semitrailers continue to decline
Update from 27.09.2023 by Editorial Team (general)
In the past years, characterized by Corona and geopolitical tensions, the numbers of new truck registrations were stagnant or declining, with partly significant losses. This could change in 2023, according to a recent projection.
Based on the monthly figures of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), we have created a chart of commercial vehicle registrations in recent years - and a projection of how the overall year 2023 could develop. The chart shows that 2019, with just over 400,000 newly registered trucks, marked the highest value in the last 10 years. The numbers in 2022 marked the low point, with just over 300,000 newly registered trucks barely above the level of 2013.
The numbers for August 2023According to the VDA, in August 2023, 24,713 commercial vehicles up to 6 tons (+31 percent compared to the same month last year) and 11,751 commercial vehicles over 6 tons (+111 percent compared to the same month last year) were newly registered, making a total of 36,464 units. Additionally, 2,392 semitrailers were newly registered in August (-16 percent compared to the same month last year).
The year 2023 so farIn the current year 2023 (January to August), 23,437 semitrailers (-12 percent compared to the previous year's period) and 64,855 commercial vehicles over 6 tons (+35 percent compared to the previous year's period) as well as 176,987 commercial vehicles up to 6 tons (+20 percent compared to the previous year's period) were newly registered.Projection for 2023If we extrapolate the VDA figures (January to August) for trucks to the full year 2023, we arrive at 265,480 units up to 6 tons and 97,282 units over 6 tons (a total of 362,762). This would represent substantial double-digit growth compared to the comparatively moderate previous years, but is still relatively significantly below the previous highs, as this value would correspond to roughly the level of 2017.
The projection for 2023 indicates that the 35,156 newly registered semitrailers would represent a nearly double-digit percentage decline compared to the previous year.

ACEA: European truck market between truck boom and van lull
Update from 28.11.2022 by Johannes Reichel
Overall, new registrations of commercial vehicles in the EU are still declining. This is due to the van segment. However, heavy trucks are seeing a significant increase.
While sales of heavy trucks and buses rebounded, the numbers in the van class, which accounts for the majority of new sales, remained declining. In the overall view, this then led to registration declines – for the 16th consecutive time. As reported by the European manufacturer association Acea on Thursday, the largest declines among the four largest markets in the region were observed in Germany. There, commercial vehicle sales decreased by 12.4 percent. France followed with a loss of 5.3 percent. In Italy, sales fell by 3.9 percent, while in Spain a growth of 1.2 was even reported.During the entire period from January to October, new registration numbers fell by 16.8 percent to 1.3 million units in Europe. The four large markets of Spain, France, Germany, and Italy all recorded double-digit losses, some over 20 percent.New light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tonsAcea reported a 13.9 percent decline in new registrations of light commercial vehicles to a total of 102,766 units in October. This affected all major EU markets, particularly Germany with a minus of 16.6 percent. Only Spain remained almost stable with a 0.5 percent decline.
The balance for the full year so far, from January to October, is also negative. Registrations of light commercial vehicles in the EU fell by a substantial 20.6 percent to one million units. The only exceptions were the markets in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. But with an increase of 1.6 and 0.1 percent, it was more stagnation than growth.Heavy commercial vehicles from 16 tonsHeavy commercial vehicles, on the other hand, showed a significant increase in new registration numbers in October, rising by 18 percent to 23,592 units. All four major markets in Western Europe contributed to this, with Italy recording the strongest growth at 33.7 percent. In Germany, the market grew only slightly, by 1.2 percent.
The balance for the entire year so far is positive. From January to October, new vehicle sales of heavy commercial vehicles increased by 5.9 percent to 211,649 units. All four major Western European markets contributed to this, except for Germany, where the numbers were down by 0.6 percent.Medium commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonsNew registration numbers for medium trucks over 3.5 tons in the EU increased by 16 percent in October. Most markets in the region also recorded double-digit growth in this segment. The development was particularly positive in Poland – the third-largest EU market for trucks –, where registration numbers rose by a significant 24.7 percent, and in Italy, where growth was even 28.5 percent. Acea reports a 3.5 percent increase in new registrations for Germany compared to October 2021.
In the overall view from January to October, medium commercial vehicles increased by 2.7 percent to 247,253 sold units. The four major markets in Western Europe recorded mixed results. Germany and France had declines of 3.7 percent and 0.8 percent. In contrast, Spain recorded a growth of 9.9 percent, followed by Italy with a more modest increase of 0.8 percent.

European Registration Figures on the Rise
Update from 30.05.2011 by Editorial Team (general)
According to statistics from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), new registrations of trucks and buses in April increased by 9.5 percent in the European Union (EU) compared to the same month of the previous year.
Since the beginning of the year, a total of 657,707 new commercial vehicles have been registered in the EU member states. This represents a 13.5 percent increase compared to the same period last year. About one in six of these vehicles were delivered in Germany. In Germany, 103,020 commercial registrations were recorded from January to April this year, a 25.5 percent increase over 2010. Germany thus remains the third-largest European market for commercial vehicles behind France with 161,941 units delivered (+7.7 percent) and the United Kingdom, where 104,190 trucks and buses were newly registered by April (+28.6 percent). The driving force behind this development is primarily the market for heavy trucks over 16 tons total weight. Their sales in Germany increased by more than 50 percent over the previous year to 19,860 units. Germany thus remains the most important European market. However, the van segment also recorded a double-digit growth rate of 18.9 percent to 58,980 units in the first four months of the year compared to the previous year, according to ACEA. Germany is thus significantly above the European average of 8.9 percent. (mid/swe)
