Commercial Vehicles: Ten Percent More New Registrations

Update from 19.02.2024 by Editorial Team (general)

The market for commercial vehicles shows solid growth in January 2024, especially in heavy vehicles and smaller transporters. Despite isolated declines in specific segments, the general demand for transport solutions is reviving. In contrast, the trailer sector shows waning momentum in new registrations.

In January of the current year, about 29,244 commercial vehicles were newly registered according to the German Association of the Automotive Industry VDA, an increase of ten percent compared to the previous year.

Development of individual vehicle classes: Commercial vehicles up to a weight of 2 tons saw a decrease of seven percent to 667 new registrations, while vehicles in the class between 2 and 3.5 tons saw an increase of 13 percent to 20,268 new registrations. Commercial vehicles between 3.5 and 6 tons recorded 533 new registrations, an increase of three percent over the previous year. Heavy commercial vehicles over 6 tons also increased: A total of 7,184 vehicles were newly registered, which corresponds to an increase of three percent. In the subgroup between 6 and 16 tons, there was an eight percent increase to 1,447 new registrations. Vehicles weighing over 16 tons saw a two percent increase to 5,737 new registrations.

Development of trailers: On the other hand, there was a slight declining trend in trailers: The total number of new registrations fell by nine percent to 16,771. Semi-trailers had to take a decline of six percent to 2,907 new registrations.

Overall assessment of the situation: Despite some declines in specific segments, the commercial vehicle market recorded solid growth overall in January 2024. Heavy commercial vehicles and smaller transporters, in particular, contributed to this positive development. This could indicate an overall increased demand for transport solutions. In contrast, the trailer sector shows slightly waning momentum in the new registration statistics.

ACEA: More Truck Registrations, Fewer Commercial Vehicles Overall

Update from 26.10.2022 by Nadine Bradl

In September 2022, new registrations of commercial vehicles in the EU declined again, marking the fifteenth consecutive monthly decline.

In September 2022, new registrations of commercial vehicles in the EU declined again, marking the fifteenth consecutive monthly decline. Despite a strong recovery in truck registrations, total sales of commercial vehicles fell by 6.6 percent to 133,873 units, weighed down by negative developments in the van segment. Except for Spain (+0.1 percent), all major markets in the EU faced declines: France (-11.0 percent), Italy (-10.7 percent), and Germany (-3.1 percent). In the first three quarters of 2022, commercial vehicle sales in the EU remained negative (-17.6 percent), totaling almost 1.2 million units. The region's four largest markets all recorded negative results, with Spain experiencing the sharpest decline (-23.0 percent). New light commercial vehicles (LCV) up to 3.5 t: In September, new registrations of light commercial vehicles in the EU fell by 11.3 percent to 105,790 units. This negative trend was reflected in the weak performance of the four key markets in the region, all of which suffered declines: Italy (-13.5 percent), France (-12.3 percent), Germany (7.2 percent), and Spain (-3.5 percent). Nine months into 2022, EU van registrations declined by 21.2 percent compared to the same period last year, reports the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA). With the exception of Cyprus (+6.4 percent) and Slovakia (+0.2 percent), all EU markets recorded declines, including the four large ones: Spain (-27.7 percent), France (-22.4 percent), Germany (-18.9 percent), and Italy (-12.4 percent). New heavy commercial vehicles (HCV) from 16 t: EU registrations of new heavy trucks were strong in September, with the segment increasing by 21.0 percent as all markets in the region—with the exception of Portugal (-35.7 percent)—recorded solid gains. Central European countries, in particular, provided a strong growth boost last month, with triple-digit growth in Croatia (+173.5 percent) and Lithuania (+154.2 percent). From January to September 2022, new heavy truck registrations increased by 4.6 percent to 188,067 units in the European Union. The two consecutive positive results in August and September helped improve the performance since the beginning of the year. As a result, three of the EU's four key markets performed better than a year ago, with Germany showing a slight decline (-0.8 percent).

New medium and heavy commercial vehicles (MHCV) over 3.5 t: In September, new registrations of medium and heavy trucks in the EU increased by 18.3 percent. With the exception of Portugal (-32.6 percent), all markets in the region contributed positively to the overall growth, including the four largest: Spain (+22.8 percent), Germany (+11.9 percent), France (+3.0 percent), and Italy (+3.0 percent). Nine months into the year, new car sales across the European Union increased by 1.5 percent, as gains recorded in the last two months brought the cumulative result into positive territory. Central European countries contributed significantly to this positive development (+9.6 percent). On the other side, of the four major Western European markets, only Spain showed growth (+10.3 percent). New medium and heavy buses and coaches (MHBC) over 3.5 t: In September 2022, EU registrations of new buses and coaches remained unchanged at 2,370 units (-0.1 percent). The four largest markets in the region recorded mixed results. The largest decline was recorded in France (-19.6 percent), followed by Germany (-5.4 percent). Italy, on the other hand, recorded a significant increase (+32.0 percent). So far in 2022, bus registrations declined by 4.8 percent to 20,457 units. Among the four major EU markets, Spain was the only one to record growth (+29.3 percent). In contrast, Germany (-22.5 percent), France (-14.9 percent), and Italy (-9.4 percent) all experienced significant declines.

Commercial Vehicle Market: Registration Numbers Rise Across Europe

Update from 26.01.2017 by Christine Harttmann

In 2016, new registrations increased by 11.6 percent to a total of 2.32 million. Alone in December, 211,941 new units were added—a 10.4 percent increase.

This is confirmed by statistics published by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), which track trucks, transporters, vans, and buses. All five major segments developed better than in 2015. The market was particularly strong in Italy, where sales increased by 49.9 percent over the year. In December alone, numbers shot up by 97 percent, almost a doubling. The ACEA attributes this to the government support that has been promoting the purchase of new fleet vehicles since September. In Spain, annual new registrations increased by 11.3 percent. A plus of 7.0 percent is reported for Germany, and the market in France grew by 8.3 percent. Significant weaknesses, on the other hand, were shown in Great Britain, where new registrations increased by a meager 1.2 percent in 2016. In December, they even experienced a 9.7 percent drop. Lighter commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tons were on average well, with an 11.9 percent increase in registrations across Europe. For heavy commercial vehicles over 16 tons, registration numbers in 2016 saw a slightly greater increase of 12.3 percent. Italy stands out significantly in the ACEA statistics here as well: an impressive 52.9 percent growth, driven by state support, according to the association. However, the market volume in Italy remains clearly below pre-crisis levels. For medium-weight trucks over 3.5 tons, 365,051 new vehicles were registered EU-wide. This is an 11 percent increase from 2015, with Italy being the growth driver in this segment as well, with 54.4 percent.

Registration Numbers: Transporters Drive Increase

According to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association ACEA, the commercial vehicle market in Europe is continuing to rise. In June, 166,929 transporters, trucks, and buses were registered EU-wide. This is 13.2 percent more than in the same month last year.

Half-year figures are also positive, according to the ACEA. 887,862 new registrations correspond to an increase of 4.3 percent over the first six months of 2009. The main driving force is the growing demand for transporters. In June alone, 141,528 units were sold, 12.9 percent more than in the same month last year. For the entire first half of the year, the association reports 758,241 new registrations and an eight percent increase. The market for heavier commercial vehicles, on the other hand, is recovering only slowly. Although 22,318 units were newly registered in June, representing a 16.6 percent increase over the same month last year, for the first half of the year, there is still a 13.4 percent decline in the records.
