The vehicle registration certificate will not only be available in the classic paper version in the future, but also as a smart and digital solution in the i-Kfz app, which was jointly developed by the Federal Motor Transport Authority and the Federal Printing Office on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport.

Starting April 28, the pilot phase of the digital vehicle registration certificate will begin in the new i-Kfz app. Citizens can register immediately and test the app. In a press release, the Federal Ministry of Transport points out that there are a total of around 2,500 places available, and their allocation is based on the order of registration.

Federal Minister Volker Wissing hopes to make life easier for citizens with the new digital offering.

"Whether in the drawer, in the jacket pocket, or in the car - the frequent search for the vehicle registration will soon come to an end," the minister is convinced. "In the i-Kfz app, the document will always be digitally present on the smartphone in the future. To ensure that this app is perfectly tailored to the needs of the citizens, we need testers. Join in and help make the digitalization of the vehicle registration in Germany a success."

The voluntary users can gather initial experience with the i-Kfz app before the public rollout and provide feedback on its functionalities. The feedback is intended to help further develop the i-Kfz app according to needs. After finalization, the app will be available for download for iOS and Android from the respective app stores and is expected to be usable by all citizens in the second half of the year.

With the digital version of the vehicle registration certificate, the obligation to carry the paper form in Germany is eliminated. Additionally, multiple vehicle registration certificates can be stored simultaneously in the app. Furthermore, the digital vehicle registration certificate can be shared with any number of drivers of the vehicle - even on a time-limited basis. It is the first product of the digital vehicle documents. In the future, additional vehicle- and owner-related documents such as the driver's license are expected to be integrated into the app.
