MAN has started production of the new 13-liter diesel engine MAN D30 at the Nuremberg plant. It is the last of its kind—after more than 100 years of diesel engine manufacturing at the location. The company has invested around 220 million euros in the site for the realization of production, as well as an additional 30 million euros for the associated crankshaft production at the Salzgitter plant. The D30 is the largest standard engine in the portfolio, which is installed in the 40-ton semi-trailer trucks MAN TGX and TGS.

"In the Traton Group, we are growing ever closer together and bundling our extensive know-how in joint developments. Today, we are taking another important step in this direction. The completely newly developed engine is now also being used at MAN," said Traton CEO Christian Levin.

MAN CEO Alexander Vlaskamp: "By 2030, every second vehicle we deliver to customers is to have an emissions-free drive. However, this also means that on the path towards the transition to electromobility, we will still need very efficient combustion engines for a long time. Therefore, we are investing in both technologies in Nuremberg."

Nuremberg: Core Components for Combustion and Electric Vehicle Drives

After ramping up production at the traditional Nuremberg plant, around 160 employees will work on the D30 in a three-shift operation. The technical capacity allows for the production of approximately 50,000 engines per year. It will be MAN's last fully newly developed diesel commercial vehicle engine – a successor generation is not planned. Thus, the diesel engine bridges the gap in the transition from the combustion engine to electrified drives. Its production start coincides almost simultaneously with the planned start of battery series production at the site in spring. For many years, Nuremberg will manufacture core components for drives for both combustion and electrically powered vehicles from MAN.

D30: Maximum Efficiency of Over 50%

The D30 has a maximum efficiency of over 50% and one of the best fuel economies in its class. In the MAN TGX, this results in fuel savings, according to initial press tests, compared to a MAN TGX with the previous drivetrain generation by an average of 5% when combined with the so-called PowerLion drivetrain and aerodynamic measures. The D30 replaces the previously available D26 and D15 engine series. The D30 is available in six power stages from 380 to 560 hp with torques ranging from 2,100 to 2,800 Nm.
