This time, the new contract for the takeover and processing of waste from the organic waste bin has been awarded to a waste processor from the region, said a spokesperson. The contract begins on January 1, 2026. The contract will run at least until the end of 2029 and will automatically be extended by two more years each time. The previous contractual relationship with the processor from Austria had existed since early 2016.
"Biowaste Farce" Made Headlines
About two years ago, a satire show and other media reported on the "biowaste farce." German biowaste from the Ravensburg district travels approximately 50 kilometers per trip to Lustenau on the Bavarian-Austrian border to be converted into biogas.
“It took a long time,” stated SPD district councilor Rudolf Bindig in Ravensburg regarding the contract conclusion. But it is a victory for reason, economically sensible, and above all, a gain for the environment. According to the district, around 10,000 tons of biowaste are produced annually.
Conversely, the 18,000 tons of organic waste from Vorarlberg were supposed to be transported to Amtzell in Upper Swabia starting in 2024. However, according to media reports, this did not work out due to the consistency of the waste. Therefore, the Vorarlberg organic waste is now being transported by train to a processor in Lower Austria.
