The intralogistics group Mecalux has installed two automated storage systems at the headquarters of Boehli, a brand in the European snack market, to improve the production of 31 tons of snacks per day. This is according to a press release from Mecalux. The plant, opened in 2000 in Gundershoffen, France, has seven production lines that deliver snacks—especially pretzels and breadsticks—to more than 22 countries.

“Thanks to automation, we can handle and dispatch an average of 360 pallets per day,” explains Raphael Wurtz, operations manager at Boehli.

The facilities were equipped with an automatic “Pallet Shuttle” with stacker crane for finished products and another 80-meter long automated system for the storage of raw materials and packaging. According to the Alsatian company Mecalux, the performance has been maximized by combining both solutions. This allows the available space, which amounts to a total storage capacity of 4,054 pallets, to be better utilized.

With the implementation of the warehouse management system "Easy WMS," the production and automated logistics of Boehli have been integrated. Now the company can ensure a just-in-time supply of its production lines. According to Mecalux, the storage and manufacturing areas are connected by automated guided vehicles (AGV) to ensure a smoother and more efficient workflow.

39 percent of Boehli's production is exported, primarily to Germany, Denmark, Japan, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, and Australia. The company emphasizes the importance of warehousing technology for supplying these markets.

“The robot-assisted operations can optimize the material flow and increase the shipping capacity of customer orders,” says Wurtz.
